Hi CAUSE Members!
I am currently a graduate student at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. In my thesis research, I am investigating the teaching of sports analytics.
I am currently in the process of designing an advanced undergraduate statistics course centered on sports analytics, and I could use your help. I am hoping to gather any syllabi, textbooks, or materials that could be of use to the development of this potential course. This research is aimed at furthering educational opportunities in the field of sports analytics, as many statistics students have interest in this area.
If you would like to assist me in this process, pleas email any syllabi/materials to:
jhavstad8(a)gmail.com
Thank you for your help!
Dear CAUSE members,
I write to you to ask your support with biostatistics education research. I’m currently doing data collection of biostatistics syllabus for a research project I’m working on. I kindly ask that you contribute your introductory biostatistics syllabus for graduate level courses. The purpose of the research will be descriptive in nature and utilize social network analysis.
There are three ways you could help with this research please choose one that you find convenient:
1. You can upload your syllabus via the dedicated google drive: https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/folders/1s9MkMASG_Ev_vKkZDVpRl4CAVyZFW3uf
2. You could leave a link to your syllabus in this spreadsheet and our team can retrieve your syllabus: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1VUe1q2d8v4nJdkc06OanUj8j3-oIeMHLys8…
3. Or you could email your syllabus to my research email estr2525(a)gmail.com<mailto:estr2525@gmail.com>
Thank you for your time and your contribution!

You are invited to a free, virtual panel discussion on "Generative AI in Statistics and Data Science Classrooms" that is happening on Tuesday, May 21st, 3:00 - 4:00 pm ET. The panel will feature Jacob Bien (University of Southern California), Amanda Ellis (University of Kentucky), and Xinming Tu (University of Washington) and will be moderated by Donna LaLonde (ASA) and myself. The panel discussion is being organized by the ASA Section for Statistics and Data Science Education.
The panelists will briefly summarize their own experiences and will provide suggestions for those interested in exploring the use of generative AI in their own classes. There will be plenty of time for questions and for attendees to also share their thoughts on this timely topic.
To register for the webinar go to: https://amstat.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_eQdgkPGBTcCYabn6tufbFA
We hope to see you there! Please come with your questions and thoughts on the topic!

The Consortium for the Advancement of Undergraduate Statistics Education is happy to announce our 96th Cartoon Caption Contest! Each month a cartoon, drawn by British cartoonist John Landers, is posted for you and your students to suggest statistical captions (cartoons are posted at the beginning of the month and submissions are due at the end of the month). The caption contest is offered as a fun way to get your students thinking independently about statistical concepts.
The next cartoon and the entry rules for the contest ending May 31 are at
https://www.causeweb.org/cause/caption-contest/may/2024/submissions
The best submission will be posted on CAUSEweb and the winner(s) will receive their choice of a coffee mug or t-shirt imprinted with the final cartoon or free registration to eCOTS2024.
Enjoy.

April Results:
The April caption contest cartoon is shown above. The judges found the winning caption to be “Ever since they made the minimum load size 30, the Central Laundry Theorem has never been so pronounced!” submitted by Grant Zou a student at the University of Virginia. Grant’s caption illustrates the idea that the normal approximation works better for larger samples. An honorable mention this month goes to Dashiell Young-Saver, an instructor at IDEA South Flores High School for the caption "I told them to use the 'delicates' cycle, but I guess they set it to normal!” and to Alden, a student at Friends Seminary for the caption “normal or not -- you've got to keep the data clean,” with both captions useful for conversations about the normal approximation for data and cleaning messy data.
Thanks to everyone who submitted a caption and congratulations to our winners!
Finally, we would like to note that this month saw more than thirty student entries - kudos to the instructors using the contest as a fun activity in their courses.
