Instructors,
As you may know, we recently received NSF funding (DUE-1323210) to facilitate assessment of (algebra-based) introductory statistics courses, with a focus on gaining a better understanding of potential differences in student learning between “traditional” and simulation/randomization-based introductory statistics courses. As such, we are asking you to consider having your students participate in the assessment project regardless of how much (if any) simulation- and randomization-based inference methods you use in your course. As a thank you for your participation, we are happy to offer a $100 stipend and a customized report on your students’ performance in your class. If you are interested in participating, please fill out this short survey, as soon as possible, but early enough to allow time to set up individualized links for your class before your term starts: www.surveymonkey.com/r/979KS27 . Instructors are signing up now for classes which begin in January/ February 2017 . You are welcome to share this link with others at your institutions, so that we can expand the number of intra-institutional comparisons between different curricula and before/after changes to new curricula that we can make.
Some brief details follow, with answers to some commonly asked questions here .
1. Students in your introductory statistics course (undergraduate or high school level) will take a pre-test (preferably before the course starts, but no later than the first week of classes). The “test” contains multiple choice questions that assess conceptual understanding and student attitudes toward statistics. Most students take approximately 45 minutes to complete the test. The test is administered completely online (we will provide you the link). Students can complete the test either inside or outside of class. See the FAQ for more information on encouraging student participation and IRB including opt-out options. After the closing date you specify, we will send you the student names and individual performance data. At the end of your course, students will take a single multiple choice, online post-test about attitudes and concepts (or, for the post-test only, separated concepts and attitudes tests). Again, we’ll provide you the individualized link.
2. Assuming your sections attain at least 75% participation rates, and you fill out a brief (<30 minute survey about your course (e.g., size, pedagogy, classroom technology, etc.) at the conclusion of the course, you will receive the stipend and customized report.
We anticipate publishing a series of articles on the data gathered as part of this project. Neither student-nor instructor-level information will be reported individually (only in aggregate) in these articles. If you are interested in participating but have questions about your institution’s IRB, please contact us as well—notably, at most institutions there is no IRB paperwork needed.
Again, if you are interested in participating, please fill out this short survey, as soon as possible, but early enough to allow time to set up links for your class before your semester starts: www.surveymonkey.com/r/979KS27 . After we receive your survey responses, you will be contacted directly by us with more information/details.
Please direct additional questions to either Cindy Nederhoff assessment administrator: cindy.nederhoff(a)dordt.edu ) or Nathan Tintle project director: nathan.tintle(a)dordt.edu ).
Thanks for considering this,

CAUSE and the American Statistical Association are happy to announce the 8th annual undergraduate statistics project competition (USPROC). New this year we will have two project submission deadlines:
* December 23 , 2016 for fall/summer 2016 projects
* June 30 , 2017 for year long and spring 2017 projects
Project submission for the December 23 , 2016 deadline is now open! Cash prizes and an invitation to give a plenary talk at the annual electronic undergraduate statistics conference for all winners. Learn more here: www.causeweb.org/usproc
Think about your students this semester in all levels of statistics courses, as well as summer and independent research students. Competition tracks for all student levels are available. The purpose of USPROC is to encourage the development of data analysis skills, to enhance presentation skills, and to recognize outstanding work by undergraduate statistics students. There are two main categories for submissions to the competition:
* Undergraduate Statistics Class Project Competition (USCLAP): This competition is for undergraduate students who are taking an applied statistics course(s) at introductory, or intermediate levels, in which a class project is part of the course work (either required or optional).
* Undergraduate Statistics Research Project Competition (USRESP): This competition is for undergraduate students who conduct research projects that are statistically related, either methodological or applied. The types of research projects may include research work from REU research projects, senior capstone research projects, or independent research projects that are not based on a specific course which students are taking.

Free ASA Webinar: 2016 GAISE College Report
Tuesday, December 6 @ 4 pm Eastern Time
Does your New Year’s Resolution include implementing the new GAISE 2016 College Report in your classroom? Although there is a GAISE Pre-K-12 Report, the GAISE College Report should also be of interest for those teaching college level statistics in high school (AP Statistics, etc.).
In August 2016 , the GAISE 2016 College Report ( www.amstat.org/education/gaise ) was endorsed by the American Statistical Association. Although the six recommendations of the original report remain, there have been some changes. The new report includes two new emphases, the goals are now written as learning objectives and the appendices have been expanded. This webinar will give you a quick overview of the changes in the report and then move on to providing food for thought on ways to implement the two new emphases , “Teach statistics as an investigative process of problem-solving and decision making” and “Give students experience with multivariate thinking”. In addition, the discussion will include potential topics to reduce or leave out, making room for these new ideas.
Presenters:
Robert Carver (Stonehill College)
Megan Mocko (University of Florida)
Beverly Wood (Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University)
Please use the link below to RSVP for the free webinar. The webinar will be recorded and posted on the GAISE Report webpage.

The next cartoon and the entry rules for the contest ending December 1 are at
https://www.causeweb.org/cause/caption-contest/december/2016/submissions
The best captions will be posted on CAUSEweb and the winner(s) will receive their choice of a coffee mug or t-shirt imprinted with the cartoon or free registration to eCOTS 2018.
Enjoy.
November Results: We had 42 submissions for the November caption contest that featured a cartoon showing an angry mob, reminiscent of the villagers in the Frankenstein movie, leaving a "Statistical Institute". The November caption contest was won by Andrea Boito from Penn State University, Altoona. Andrea’s caption “Dr. Frankenstein accepted the null for the last time,” was selected for its ability to foster a discussion about statistical issues in the classroom. Two honorable mentions that rose to the top of the judging included a repackaging of the classic refrain “If you torture data enough it will confess,” written by Caleb Ohrn a student at Akron University and “Did you check to see if the conditions were met? Ignore them at your own peril!” written by an anonymous author.
Thanks to everyone who submitted a caption and congratulations to all of our Winners!
