The Consortium for the Advancement of Undergraduate Statistics Education is happy to announce our 85th Cartoon Caption Contest! Each month a cartoon, drawn by British cartoonist John Landers, is posted for you and your students to suggest statistical captions (cartoons are posted at the beginning of the month and submissions are due at the end of the month). The caption contest is offered as a fun way to get your students thinking independently about statistical concepts.
The next cartoon and the entry rules for the contest ending June 30 are at
https://www.causeweb.org/cause/caption-contest/june/2023/submissions
The best submission will be posted on CAUSEweb and the winner(s) will receive their choice of a coffee mug or t-shirt imprinted with the final cartoon or free registration to eCOTS2024.
Enjoy.

May Results:
The May caption contest cartoon is shown here. The judges found the winning caption to be "Graphics lead the pack when communicating with diverse crowds." written by retired Jim Alloway from EMSQ Associates. Jim's caption is a good reminder that graphics can convey a more convincing and realistic view of what data are telling us than merely presenting numerical or tabular results. An honorable mention this month goes to Larry Lesser from The University of Texas at El Paso for the caption: "In the long run, we all use stats!," that can be used to both spark discussion of the prevalence of statistics in all of our activities or to focus on a specific case like the wearable exercise trackers that runners use to monitor their pace.
Thanks to everyone who submitted a caption and congratulations to our winners!
All,
Please see the message below from Bethany White (cc’ed) regarding the upcoming IASE Conference. Looks like an outstanding program!
Registration is open now, but the cost will increase on June 16!
All the best,
Matt

Subject: Statistics and Data Science Education Conference (IASE 2023) July 11-13
Dear CAUSE Community,
With 4 thought-provoking keynote sessions, over 40 presentations, and around 30 posters, all related to the theme of "Fostering Learning of Statistics and Data Science", the July 11-13, 2023 International Association for Statistical Education<https://iase-web.org/> (ISI-IASE) & International Association for Statistical Computation<https://iasc-isi.org/> (ISI-IASC) satellite will be an exciting conference! Please check out the program here: https://iase2023satellite.github.io/program.html.
We hope you’ll consider joining us online or in-person at the University of Toronto. Registration fees go up on *June 16*, so if you’re planning to register, please do so soon. Please share with anyone you think may be interested (note that students, primary and secondary school teachers and retirees are eligible for reduced registration fees – that means 40 Euros for online participation, and 120 Euros for in-person participation if they register by June 15!) More information is available on the conference website<https://iase2023satellite.github.io/index.html>.
Sincerely,
Bethany White (on behalf of the Local Organizing Committee at the University of Toronto; Alison Gibbs and Sotirios Damouras and myself)
