About the Theme
The broad theme of the conference is "Fostering Learning of Statistics and Data Science". The data landscape is constantly shifting, driven by perpetual technological, economic, and societal developments. Information is now recorded and shared at unprecedented rates, with statisticians and data scientists called to make sense and use of increasingly complex data. Conventional methods of data analysis are being adapted for this new landscape, while additional approaches are being developed under the umbrella of Data Science. Naturally, these changes have profound implications for education too, raising important questions about what, when, to whom, and how we teach Statistics and Data Science. The theme aims to engage with these questions in order to promote and sustain learning in our field.
We invite you to participate in this Satellite Conference, to join us in sharing knowledge, questions, and ideas that enable us to learn from the work of colleagues from around the world and help to advance the teaching and learning of Statistics and Data Science.
Register by April 30 to take advantage of the early bird fees.

Dear CAUSEweb friends,
We are excited to share ads for two non-tenure track open positions here at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri.
The Statistics faculty at Truman are dedicated to excellent teaching and building connections with students not just in our program, but across campus, including a required introductory statistics course for all undergraduates. We also support students and faculty in related areas, including business, accounting, psychology, economics, biology, health, linguistics, and environmental science. Truman scores well in rankings like US News because of our commitment to students and student learning, while embracing a teacher-scholar model that connects our scholarly research to the classroom.
One position is targeted with a data science focus. This is a potentially remote, 11-month position with expected summer coursework and master's thesis advising. This position requires a terminal degree with coursework or teaching experience in data science. The full position description is below and our application portal is here:
https://trumansu.peopleadmin.com/postings/418
The second is a more traditional nine-month non-tenure-track statistics position, with no remote option. Expected teaching would be in introductory statistics, mid-level undergraduate service courses such as Regression, ANOVA, or nonparametric statistics, and other courses consistent with the candidate's background and interests. A terminal degree is not required for the Instructor title, but those with a terminal degree would be eligible to be hired as Assistant Professor and a salary premium. The full position description is below and our application portal is here:
https://trumansu.peopleadmin.com/postings/417
In addition to our undergraduate statistics major and several minors, we have recently launched a Masters in Data Science and Analytical Storytelling, combining statistics and technical coding skills with broader skills (I'd never call them "soft") including writing, rhetoric, design, and ethics. In its second year, it has quickly become among the largest graduate programs on our primarily undergraduate campus.
I'd be happy to talk to you about the position or answer any questions.
-Scott

February Results:
The February caption contest cartoon is shown here. The judges found the winning caption to be "Don't worry. Normally the cannon is right on target ... give or take a standard deviation or two," written by Laurie Baker at the College of the Atlantic. Laurie's caption can be used to introduce ideas of the bias (degree of being on target) and reliability (degree of deviation) of estimators. An honorable mention this month goes to Larry Lesser from The University of Texas at El Paso for the caption; "The can(n)ons of statistical science include testability and empiricism." Larry's caption focuses on these general canons for scientific research that apply deeply to statistics.
Thanks to everyone who submitted a caption and congratulations to our winners!

Framework for Accessible and Inclusive Teaching Materials for Statistics and Data Science Courses
Tuesday, March 21st, 2023 4:00 pm – 4:30 pm EDT
[headshot.jpg]
Presented by: Mine Dogucu (University of California Irvine/University College London)
Abstract: This month, in the CAUSE (Consortium for the Advancement of Undergraduate Statistics Education) / JSDSE (Journal of Statistics and Data Science Education) webinar series, Mine Dogucu will discuss the article, Framework for Accessible and Inclusive Teaching Materials for Statistics and Data Science Courses. The paper, coauthored by Alicia Johnson and Miles Ott, argues that despite rapid growth in the data science workforce, people of color, women, those with disabilities, and others remain underrepresented in, underserved by, and sometimes excluded from the field. Thus, this pattern prevents equal opportunities for individuals, while also creating products and policies that perpetuate inequality. And the authors of the paper argue it is critical that, as statistics and data science educators of the next generation, we center accessibility and inclusion throughout our curriculum, classroom environment, modes of assessment, course materials, and more. In the webinar, with some common strategies applied across these areas, Dr. Dogucu will present a framework for developing accessible and inclusive course materials (e.g., in-class activities, course manuals, lecture slides, etc.), with examples drawn from the authors’ experience co-writing a statistics textbook. This framework establishes a structure for holding ourselves as educators accountable to these principles.

Hi everyone,
I hope that everyone is having a wonderful March.
Next Wednesday, we will continue with the topic "Assessment in Statistics Education", and the fourth article we will read is:
Maurer, K., & Lock, D. (2016). Comparison of learning outcomes for simulation-based and traditional inference curricula in a designed educational experiment. Technology Innovations in Statistics Education, 9(1). https://doi.org/10.5070/T591026161
Our host is Eric Friedlander. Thank you, Eric!
We will meet at 2 pm ET (1 pm CT, noon MT, 11 am PT) on Wednesday, March 15th, 2023. https://ufl.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJ0kfu6grzMtHt1BZv6ydWnzcDpEl8oSOikw
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
You can find the complete schedule for the next three months February - April (under this topic) here<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.goog…>. Like last year, we are inviting and strongly encouraging interested participants to host one article or two of their own choice in the new year. We have one opening left in April! Many of our past hosts (including ourselves) found this a very valuable experience, so please consider hosting a meeting for the group. As the host, you can choose one of the suggested articles on the list OR bring/suggest an article related to this topic that you would like to discuss with the group and propose 4 to 5 questions to get the conversation started from the article you pick. Please don't hesitate to let me or Shu-Min know if you have any questions about hosting a session or participating in this reading group.
Don't worry if you didn't attend our meetings last year. All meetings are independent from each other, so please join us if you are interested. All are welcome!
Look forward to seeing you on March 15th!
