Volunteers Needed for Statistical Education Booth during Joint Statistical Meetings
We are looking for volunteers to staff the Statistical Education booth during the Joint Statistical Meetings. The booth will be located close to the JSM Registration Area. There will be flyers and other information related to statistical education at the booth. No prior experience or background is needed. It is a great way to get to know other people and to learn about ASA statistics education activities.
Two volunteers are needed for each 2-hour time slot (or 1.5 hour time slots over the lunch breaks). To volunteer, please go to www.amstat.org/education/booth/stated and fill in your name and email address in one or more of the time slots.
We appreciate your work to enhance statistics education.
Thank you!

June Results: We had 50 submissions for the June caption contest that featured a cartoon showing two basketball teams with approximately equal average heights, and with the team with the smaller median height having one extremely tall player. The June caption contest was won by Albert Koenig, a student at Belgrade High School. Albert’s entry (“I told you outliers can be influential!”) was selected for being succinct and well suited for starting a conversation about introductory statistics learning objectives. Other entries that rose to the top of the judging included “There’s nothing standard about that deviation” written by Janet Zupkus, an instructor at Naugatuck Valley Community College and “I mean, statistically it’s a fair game … the mean height is the same,” written by Kayden Schaff also a student at Belgrade High School.

Announcing a major new addition to the CAUSEweb fun collection
CAUSE is happy to announce that, as part of a collaboration with the Commercial Music Program at University of Texas at El Paso, 43 new recordings of statistics songs have just been posted to the CAUSEweb fun collection. In total, CAUSEweb now has recordings for 92 of the 97 songs in our collection – making the collection more complete and easier than ever to use in your teaching. Like other materials on CAUSEweb, the recordings are free for non-profit educational use. Thanks to undergraduate students Joshua Lintz (accompaniment realizations and male vocals) and Mariana Sandoval (female vocals) for their terrific work on this project.
Please register for the upcoming webinar: Data Exploration with CODAP on Jun 14, 2016 2:00 PM EDT at https://www.causeweb.org/cause/webinar/teaching/2016-06
Presented by: William Finzer, Concord Consortium
Abstract: The Common Online Data Analysis Platform (CODAP) is an online, free, and open source descendant of Fathom and TinkerPlots (though still far from a replacement for them). We’ll look at ways you can already use CODAP in the classroom and understand where ongoing development at Concord Consortium will take it. Research On Student Attitudes workshop July 28 -30
The American Statistical Association granted Dr. Marjorie Bond a membership initiative grant to host the Research On Statistics Attitudes (ROSA) workshop, July 28th – July 30th . The timing of the workshop allows Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM) participants to attend the workshop prior to JSM. We are asking people to fly into Chicago on July 28th , the Thursday before JSM at which time by van you’ll cross Illinois to Monmouth, IL, home of the Fighting Scots (Monmouth College) and birthplace of Wyatt Earp. For the next two days, working groups will (1) create plans to answer the four research priorities listed in the Affective (Attitude) Construct section in Connecting Research to Practice in a Culture of Assessment for Introductory College-level Statistics< https://www.causeweb.org/cause/archive/research/guidelines/ResearchReport_2… > (2012) report, and (2) learn about teaching strategies which research has shown to improve cognitive learning. Additionally by the end of the workshop, we hope to have two pilot instruments for measuring affective constructs in students and instructors ready to test. The workshop ends on Saturday evening, so on Sunday morning, you can return to Chicago by either Amtrak (arrive in Chicago by 10:38 a.m. or 3:15 p.m.) or by a van – just in time for the start of JSM! The first JSM session is at 2:00 p.m., and the opening mixer is at 6:00 p.m.
The number of participants is limited to 20 people, and it is expected that participants have prepared for the workshop prior to arrival, during, and after the workshop. We are encouraging graduate students, instructors at two-year institutions, and people new to the research area to attend the workshop. Another of our goals is to establish several working groups, and we expect to use the CAUSEmos research cluster model used at USCOTS 2007.
