Hi everyone! I would like you to know about two happenings with eCOTS 2022: the reading groups and the activity contest. Reading Groups We will have three reading groups to accompany eCOTS 2022. $500 Stipend opportunity for TSHS portal submission

The TSHS Resources Portal (https://www.causeweb.org/tshs/) is one of the major products of the TSHS Section, supporting the use of real data in the health-sciences classroom. We are always looking to expand our collection of datasets, but realize that formatting the data, generating the dictionary, and creating the introduction materials is time consuming. We are happy to announce that TSHS is sponsoring two (2) $500 stipends to be used to compensate graduate students assisting in the preparation of a portal dataset, including any required revisions. In addition to sharing great datasets, this is an opportunity for members wanting to mentor students. Also, since datasets are peer reviewed, the submitters can list the submission as a publication on their CVs. Applicants must have a publication in mind and have obtained permission to share the corresponding dataset, after deidentification, on the Portal. Datasets should be based on a journal publication in the health sciences. Rich datasets, those for which multiple types of analyses can be done, will be given priority. Upcoming JSDSE Webinar: Four Interactive Arcade Games to Teach Statistics

Four Interactive Arcade Games to Teach Statistics Presented by: Jacopo Di Iorio (Penn State University) This month, we highlight the JSDSE article, How to Get Away With Statistics: Gamification of Multivariate Statistics. One of the authors will discuss their attempt to teach applied statistics techniques typically taught in advanced courses, such as clustering and principal component analysis, to a non-mathematically educated audience by using four different interactive arcade games. The four games are all user-centric, score-based arcade experiences intended to be played under the supervision of an instructor. They were developed using the Shiny web-based application framework for R. In every activity students have to follow the instructions and to interact with plots to minimize a score with a statistical meaning. No knowledge, other than elementary geometry and Euclidean distance, is required to complete the tasks. Results from a student questionnaire give the authors some confidence that the experience benefits students. This fact suggests that these or similar activities could greatly improve the diffusion of statistical thinking at different levels of education. Jacopo Di Iorio is a post-doctoral Eberly Fellow at the Department of Statistics of the Pennsylvania State University (State College, USA). Previously a post-doctoral research fellow at Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (Pisa, Italy), in 2020 he got his Ph.D. in Mathematical Models and Methods in Engineering from Politecnico di Milano (Milano, Italy). His research interests lie primarily in the field of clustering and biclustering for multivariate and functional data, applied Statistics, and Statistics and Data Science education. Florida Summer Institute in Biostatistics and Data Science (SIBDS) 2022

Have you ever wondered how data are used to make your life better? Any thought as to why COVID-19 affects certain populations more than others? What are clinical trials, why are they important, and how are conclusions drawn from participants’ good and bad responses? If you are an undergraduate or early graduate student with a curious mind, sense of justice, and some math, technology, biology and/or health science coursework, you are eligible for Florida’s Summer Institute in Biostatistics and Data Science Program (SIBDS). SIBDS will take place at Florida Atlantic University (FAU), Boca Raton campus just north of Fort Lauderdale, from May 23rd through July 1st, 2022, with faculty from FAU, University of Miami (UM), and Florida International University (FIU). Students enrolled in SIBDS will be housed on campus unless they live close by and will receive one college credit hour plus stipend. Your participation in SIBDS will provide great experience in resume building, networking and tools that are so in demand today. The CAUSE Cartoon Caption Contest for March is now taking entries!

The Consortium for the Advancement of Undergraduate Statistics Education is happy to announce our 70th Cartoon Caption Contest! Each month a cartoon, drawn by British cartoonist John Landers, is posted for you and your students to suggest statistical captions (cartoons are posted at the beginning of the month and submissions are due at the end of the month). The caption contest is offered as a fun way to get your students thinking independently about statistical concepts. The next cartoon and the entry rules for the contest ending March 31 are at https://www.causeweb.org/cause/caption-contest/march/2022/submissions The best submission will be posted on CAUSEweb and the winner(s) will receive their choice of a coffee mug or t-shirt imprinted with the final cartoon or free registration for eCOTS. Enjoy. February Results: The February caption contest featured a scene at the “ACME Polling Company” where three people holding clipboards are all facing mirrors and seem to be interviewing themselves. In a first for the CAUSE caption contest three first place prizes will be awarded and all to students from University of Colorado, Boulder for their terrific captions. The first winning caption for the February contest was “Warning: pollster opinions may be reflected in survey results," written by Don Bell-Souder. The second winning caption this month goes to Sarah Arpin for her caption “Selection bias is in the eye of the beholder” and the third winning caption was authored by Rosie Garris for her caption “ACME polling finds that bootstrapping still reflects self-reporting bias.” All three of these winning captions invite conversation about the type of biases that may result from the way a pollster handles the logistics of taking a survey and thus the importance of careful planning. Thanks to everyone who submitted a caption and congratulations to our winners (and to the students at University of Colorado, Boulder for their creative efforts)!
