It is part of the core mission of CAUSE to stimulate the development and ongoing activities of faculty communities with interests in statistics education. Thus, we are happy to renew our program of providing some funding for regional events associated with eCOTS coming up in May. In particular, we will provide up to $50 per person registered for regional face-to-face events tied to eCOTS (typically that provides for a one-day event with lunch and break food and perhaps lodging expense for a speaker). Please email Dennis Pearl at dkp13(a)psu.edu if you are interested in hosting an event. Deadline is Nov. 1st to let us know you are interested and Feb. 15 for a final commitment to host your event.

The Consortium for the Advancement of Undergraduate Statistics Education is happy to announce our 87th Cartoon Caption Contest! Each month a cartoon, drawn by British cartoonist John Landers, is posted for you and your students to suggest statistical captions (cartoons are posted at the beginning of the month and submissions are due at the end of the month). The caption contest is offered as a fun way to get your students thinking independently about statistical concepts - a great activity for the start of the new term.
The next cartoon and the entry rules for the contest ending August 31 are at
https://www.causeweb.org/cause/caption-contest/august/2023/submissions
The best submission will be posted on CAUSEweb and the winner(s) will receive their choice of a coffee mug or t-shirt imprinted with the final cartoon or free registration to eCOTS2024.

July Results:
The July caption contest cartoon is shown here. The judges found the winning caption to be “Good Data Infographics grab everyone's attention!” submitted by Carolyn Showalter from Ocean County College. Carolyn’s caption is a good reminder that graphical presentations are more readily digested by viewers than mere statistical summaries. An honorable mention this month goes to Larry Lesser from University of Texas at El Paso for his caption: “We can all have a flare for statistics!,” that can be used to encourage students who might otherwise be anxious about their statistics studies.
Thanks to everyone who submitted a caption and congratulations to our winners!

Stats + Stories Lesson Plan Contest
This contest is a call for lesson plans that use Stats + Stories podcasts. The lesson plan should include the appropriate materials needed by both students and teachers. As examples, a good lesson plan might include: instructions for the students to carry out the activity, instructor tips, learning objectives, time to complete the activity, resources needed to complete the activity, recommended course, recommendation for in class or out-of-class use for the activity, and skills required. The lesson plan should be accompanied by a grading rubric for any assessment.
Lesson plans should be submitted by January 1, 2024.
Along with cash prizes totaling $1000, the top winners will present their activity in a panel during eCOTS 2024 from May 28th to May 31st and have them posted on CAUSEweb.org<http://causeweb.org/> and statsandstories.net. The lesson plans will be judged by a panel of educators.
More details, including the judging rubric, will be available on CAUSEweb in late August.

June Results:
The June caption contest cartoon is shown here. The judges found the winning caption to be “Data Science can turn 0's and 1's into a tasty treat” written by Julie Skokie from North Broward Preparatory School. Julie’s caption is a good reminder that the 0’s and 1’s underlying the computational aspects of Data Science helps to transform data into useful knowledge. An honorable mention this month goes to an anonymous submission for the caption: “Gwen finally realized why the Bernoulli Bakery only sold donuts and eclairs,” that can be used to introduce the Bernoulli probability distribution.
Thanks to everyone who submitted a caption and congratulations to our winners!
