P1-02: R Simulation Apps for Learning Probability using ‘Shiny’

By Roger Johnson (South Dakota School of Mines & Technology)

Information

Roger Johnson, South Dakota School of Mines & Technology

Apps available at http://www.mcs.sdsmt.edu/rwjohnso/ (look near the bottom of the page), will be demonstrated. These apps, which may be run within R or R Studio using the ‘shiny’ package, include simulations which visually demonstrate:

  • The Central Limit Theorem
  • Coverage rates for confidence intervals on a proportion
  • The number of trials to complete a collection of coupons

It is hoped that participants will feel free to download these apps and that some, who have the needed modest amount of programming skill, will be encouraged to write their own apps using the shiny package. Apps for teaching calculus are also available at the above site.
