Abstract

The SCORE Network is an NSF-funded initiative aimed at enhancing statistics and data science education through sports. It builds a repository of peer-reviewed teaching modules that connect sports-related questions and datasets for classroom use. Modules are stand-alone materials that can take a variety of forms (and include such items as introductory videos, dataset(s), and handouts) that instructors can incorporate into their courses.

After an introduction to SCORE, attendees will create their own module by brainstorming sports questions and data ideas. Workshop facilitators will guide participants through each step, helping to prepare participants’ modules for submission to SCORE. To encourage timely submission, modules developed during the workshop will receive an expedited review process if submitted within four weeks of USCOTS. Attendees that choose not to submit to the network will still benefit by becoming familiar with the network’s resources and will be encouraged to utilize the network in any way that benefits them.

This workshop is for statistics educators interested in incorporating sports data into teaching. Interest in sports is helpful but not necessary. Attendees are encouraged to explore SCORE materials beforehand for inspiration (see scorenetwork.org).

Participants should bring a laptop with internet access and statistical software for analysis. Facilitators will provide example datasets from data.scorenetwork.org, but attendees are welcome to use their own data. Familiarity with R, Quarto, and GitHub is helpful but not required.

By the end, participants will have a clear module outline and resources to complete and submit their module for peer review in the SCORE repository.
