Abstract
This full-day workshop invites statistics instructors to explore methods for teaching introductory statistics through the lens of social justice. Participants will engage with social justice pedagogical goals grounded in mathematics education research and apply them to create meaningful learning experiences for their students. Activities will include analyzing historical and socially relevant data using CODAP (Common Online Data Analysis Platform), a free, web-based tool for data exploration and visualization. A short tutorial will introduce CODAP, making it accessible even to those with no prior experience. Participants will then apply these tools and frameworks to begin designing their own classroom tasks using data that connects to social justice themes.
This workshop is designed for instructors of introductory statistics courses who are interested in integrating social justice into their teaching. While familiarity with introductory statistics concepts is expected, no prior experience with CODAP or social justice pedagogical frameworks is required. Participants should bring a laptop with internet access to fully engage in the hands-on activities.
