F13: Let's talk about data | CANCELLED

By Shonda Kuiper (Grinnell College)

Information

We will share freely available curricula designed to encourage students to become more statistically skilled communicators. We use interdisciplinary stories and data journalism pieces that incorporate interactive apps and pedagogical tools that allow students to explore, simulate and modify data from published research. It is designed to bring disciplines together by combining aspects of data analysis, storytelling, and social justice. Students can use guided questions to discuss the importance of data-based decisions that are currently influencing our society. Shiny apps allow students to create models and graphs that reflect each researcher’s viewpoint as well as explore other perspectives not directly examined in the story. Additional open-ended questions encourage students to use freely available data to find their own perspectives, develop their own research questions, and communicate their results with a broader audience.
