Abstract

Journals are a common avenue for communicating about educational practices and research. However, most reviewers learn how to review a journal article informally through trial and error. Similarly, authors may be unsure of the expectations for a statistics education article, especially as it relates to the three statistics education journals. This often makes the publishing process a mystery for both authors and reviewers, leaving them feeling uncertain about the process. Editors from The Journal of Statistics and Data Science Education (JSDSE), Technology Innovations in Statistics Education (TISE), and Statistics Education Research Journal (SERJ) are providing a breakout session to make the publishing process more transparent for current and future reviewers and authors, including describing the different expectations among the three journals. By engaging participants in a “learn-by-doing” approach, this breakout session will provide guidance on what to include in articles (for authors) and how to review articles and provide meaningful feedback to authors (for reviewers) of statistics and data science education journal articles. As time permits, we will provide examples of writing and have participants generate feedback before sharing the type of feedback expected or given by reviewers. Finally, we will provide time for the participants to ask questions of the session leaders, who are on the editorial boards of the statistics education journals.
