Abstract

A significant amount of research regarding Hip-Hop Based Education (HHBE) fails to provide insight on how to incorporate elements of Hip-Hop into daily teaching practices; rather educators focus mainly on incorporating Hip-Hop culture into curricula. This talk explores how pedagogical approaches that are directly tied to the creative elements of Hip-Hop can be used to engage young people. We will explore Hip-Hop can be incorporated into the art and science of teaching, extending current Hip-Hop Education research, which mainly discusses how Hip-Hop can be used to design curricula based on music and rhymes. Finally, we will look at the Science Genius battles program, an initiative focused on utilizing the power of hip-hop music and culture to introduce youth to the wonder and beauty of science, as an exemplar of Hip-Hop Pedagogy.
