W15: Doing data science in Positron (Thur, July 17, 1:00 – 4:15 pm)

Mine Cetinkaya-Rundel (Duke University) and Hadley Wickham (Posit)

Abstract

Join us for an immersive half-day workshop on Positron, the cutting-edge data science IDE from the creators of RStudio. Positron is an extensible, polyglot tool that seamlessly integrates the powerful and familiar features of RStudio with the versatility of Visual Studio Code.

This workshop is designed to introduce RStudio users to Positron, showcasing its advanced capabilities for scripting, reproducible authoring with Quarto, version control with Git and GitHub, and an enhanced publishing experience. Throughout the half-day workshop, we will explore how Positron supports multiple programming languages, enabling a fluid and efficient workflow. We will learn to author reproducible and shareable computational documents using Quarto within Positron and gain experience with Git and GitHub integration for robust version control.

While the primary focus will be on data science workflows with R, we will also cover considerations and best practices for projects involving Python and other languages. Additionally, the workshop will discuss strategies for teaching with Positron across various levels of statistics and data science curricula.
