Building a Community Resource for Teaching Assistants: The UCSC Statistics TA Wiki

By Marcela Alfaro Cordoba (University of California Santa Cruz)

Information

The UCSC Statistics TA Wiki is a community-driven, GitHub-hosted resource designed to support graduate teaching assistants (TAs) in the Department of Statistics at the University of California, Santa Cruz. This centralized repository consolidates key resources, pedagogical strategies, and course-specific materials, equipping TAs with the tools to excel in their roles while fostering inclusive and effective teaching practices.

Initiated in Summer 2023 with funding from the Teaching and Learning Center’s Graduate Pedagogy Fellows program, the project was developed by Andrew Le, Antonio Aguirre, and Professor Marcela Alfaro Córdoba and has since evolved with community feedback. The Wiki offers essential guidance on preparing for the quarter, managing office hours, grading, communicating with students and faculty, and accessing professional development opportunities. Its modular, live-document format ensures continuous updates and adaptability to departmental needs.

This poster will present the Wiki’s development, including its structure, collaborative workflows on GitHub, and strategies for sustaining engagement. We will highlight how the resource streamlines TA onboarding, fosters collaboration, and enhances professional growth. By sharing our successes and challenges, we hope to inspire similar initiatives across departments, demonstrating the value of centralized, community-driven resources in academic teaching and learning.
