W02: Using a student’s passion and real-world data to engage them in original research in Introductory Statistics (Room 211)

Kristin Flaming (Valdosta State U.)

Abstract

"This workshop will support participants in planning authentic data-driven research curriculum for use across various disciplines and for engaging students at many different levels, including complete beginners. The NSF-funded curriculum, Passion-Driven Statistics, takes advantage of students’ natural curiosity and provides a common language for approaching questions across disciplines. Students are engaged in authentic projects with large, real-world data sets from the very first day! The goal of each class session is to create a welcoming and empowering seat at the table for every student that enters the classroom.

The session will include brief presentations focused on the nuts and bolts of the model (http://passiondrivenstatistics.com ebook: http://bit.ly/PDSe-book) followed by hands-on experience with the steps that allow students to engage in independent research. Each participant’s experience in the workshop will be individualized to their interests, background and needs. Early career instructors and graduate students are especially encouraged to attend. Participants will leave with access to freely available materials they can use in their classroom the very next day. Example resources include daily topic outlines, assignments, quizzes, handouts, lecture videos, and current instructors willing to help participants integrate one assignment or the entire project-based approach into their course.

Laptop computers are required. If you are proficient in a statistical software platform and have it on your laptop, you are welcome to use it for the hands-on portion. For those interested in learning a code-based software platform, we will support you in using SAS in the cloud (free and requires nothing to be downloaded)."
