Tu-25: Infusing Activities Centered Around Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion into Statistics Courses

Abstract

Incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) themes into statistics courses can seem daunting, though most people know that it is a critical step in helping our students become better citizens in the world. Dr. Brene Brown, a research professor at the University of Houston, says “People are opting out of very difficult conversations about DEI because they’re afraid of being wrong, looking wrong, saying something wrong.” Dr. Brown goes on to explain that this is not an excuse to not have these challenging discussions. This poster will share activities and ideas on how to incorporate DEI themes into introductory statistics classes. Information on projects, assignments, and class discussions related to DEI that have been successfully used in introductory statistics courses will be provided.

Participants will take away ideas on how to incorporate DEI into statistics coursework. We hope that participants will gain the confidence and motivation to incorporate DEI into statistics coursework.
