Design of Experiments (DoE) is a statistical technique with wide application in engineering, business, and research. It ‘separates the vital few causes from the trivial many.’ A number of commercial statistical software packages have DoE platforms. Even if DoE were not widely used, it can augment introductory statistics by enhancing an understanding of the process of scientific discovery, the omnipresence of variation, and the importance of multi causal systems. In addition, teaching DoE with George Box’s helicopter experiment can assess the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains of learning. Our discussion will include how to promote DoE in the classroom.
