Information
Classification, prediction, and inference are three major components of data science. It is crucial that our students learn the foundational concepts in these areas. These concepts should be taught using tools that focus on the ideas themselves, rather than being obstructed by programming language barriers. Teaching programming languages while simultaneously introducing foundational data science concepts can often overwhelm students, particularly those in introductory courses. While learning a programming language is essential for advanced data science students, it can distract beginners and is often unnecessary for applying concepts in practice.
In this talk, we introduce Rguroo, a web-based statistical software platform specifically designed for teaching and applying statistics and data science concepts. Our focus will be on how educators can leverage this software to teach classification, prediction, model specification, and model validation. The session will begin with a general overview of the software, followed by introducing hands-on activities featuring engaging problems in inference, linear regression, logistic regression. Each activity will showcase the software’s features and demonstrate how they can be used to effectively teach key concepts in these areas.
Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop, iPad, or other internet-connected device to actively engage in the hands-on activities.
