P3-10: Controlling for Context by Standardizing

By Milo Schield (Augsburg University)

Abstract

Today’s students want to engage in social issues. To really understand social issues, students need to "see" how to take something into account involving numbers. Students get engaged in learning that there may be a story behind the story involving crude statistics. Using simple techniques (algebraic and graphical), standardizing shows students what it means to 'control for' (to take into account) a related factor. Standardizing allows students to work problems that can be on the final without needing a computer.
