We had 18 submissions for the July caption contest that featured a cartoon showing a scene with four people – each experiencing vary different weather. The July caption contest was won by Michael Huberty from University of Minnesota. Michael’s entry (“Now this is what I call a 25% chance of nice weather!”) was selected for being well suited for starting a conversation about the meaning of probability statements in the media such as when you hear there’s a 25% chance of rain in the forecast. Other honorable mentions that rose to the top of the judging included “A data set with seasonality” written by Larry Lesser from University of Texas at El Paso; “ANOVA – Analysis of Varied Atmospheres,” written by Deb Sedik from Bucks County Community College: and “Variability matters!” written by Debmalya Nandy, a student at Penn State University.
Rules- Captions will be judged on value for teaching statistics (i.e. make them funny and relevant to your learning objective).
- The best caption(s) will be published on CAUSEweb.org and, as always, the cartoons may be used free of charge in non-profit education settings.
- Entries are welcome from all who use or enjoy statistics, including: students, instructors, and professionals.
- Prize: Choice of a mug or t-shirt imprinted with the cartoon or free registration for eCOTS 2018.
- Contest ends at 11:59pm EDT on Friday July 1st, 2016.
- No more than two entries per person.
