Automated decision-making isn't always a home run: sometimes, the results are foul!

The cartoon for our 123rd cartoon caption contest in August is shown above. Amongst the contest submissions, the judges found the winning caption to be "Automated decision-making isn't always a home run: sometimes, the results are foul!,” written by Erin Franke a student at Carnegie Mellon University. Erin’s caption can be used to discuss the possible flaws of automated decision making when you don’t understand the model used and the possible biases and reliability of the results produced. Erin also received an honorable mention this month for her second caption “The flaws of automation can be pane-fully obvious,” that hits on a similar theme in a punny way. A second honorable mention this month goes to Jim Alloway from EMSQ Associates for the caption “Power hitter or not, an AI lacking accuracy and precision, just isn’t ready for the major leagues.” Jim’s caption may be used to remind students that AI can readily make mistakes and it’s accuracy and precision depend on how well it was trained for the issue at hand.
