The cartoon for our 122nd cartoon caption contest in July is shown above. Amongst the 33 submissions for the contest, the judges found the winning caption to be "The rat race to publish is hindered by both missing and duplicate values.,” written by Jim Alloway from EMSQ Associates. Jim’s caption can be used to remind students of the importance of careful planning and adherence to the plan when collecting data. The first honorable mention this month goes to Shannon Merino, a student at Miracosta College for her caption "Would this be a cat-a-gorical or rat-a-gorical variable?" that would facilitate a discussion of the different variable types and what types of information they carry. A second honorable mention goes to Victor Chongchua from San Diego State University, for his caption “"Circular statistics won't work without unique identifiers,” that invites discussion about the need for unique identifiers in data sets as an important part of data wrangling especially when merging information sources. Note the different viewpoints being expressed about the numbers on the animals backs by these submissions - are they information about the type of rats in the race or identifiers of the individual animals?
