Treating statistical significance as your only guiding light can lead to backward conclusions

The cartoon for our 119th cartoon caption contest in April is shown above. Amongst the 61 submissions for the contest, the judges found the winning caption to be "Treating statistical significance as your only guiding light can lead to backward conclusions,” written by Sara Colando, a student at Carnegie Mellon University. Sara’s caption can be used in discussing the caveats of using statistical significance as the main guide in reporting an analysis. Two honorable mentions this month who also pointed to hypothesis testing themes go to Jaiden Bock, a student at North Broward Preparatory School for his caption “Statistically significant… philosophically questionable” and to Noura Zayyad, a student at University of North Carolina Wilmington, for her caption “Guys, relax the oracle says its significant.” More closely following the original idea of the cartoon of showing Diogenes searching for honest statistical reporting was a third honorable mention going to Jim Alloway from EMSQ Associates for his caption “While Diogenes searched for an honest p-value, others did an about face and went with confidence intervals.”
