BoF-W-08: Fair and Fun Evaluation in Asynchronous Virtual Courses with Oral Exams

Suhwon Lee (University of Missouri)

Information

Evaluating student work fairly in asynchronous courses has become increasingly challenging, especially in the era of AI generated solutions. Instructors often struggle to gauge students’ genuine understanding without real time interaction, and students miss opportunities to articulate their learning verbally, a skill that is more critical than ever. This session will discuss ways that oral exams can be a fair, engaging, and human centered assessment method for virtual classes. Participants will discuss practical models for implementing oral exams, discuss how to customize the format to fit various class types and sizes, and share best practices, common pitfalls, and lessons learned. While oral exams may not be feasible for very large introductory courses, participants are encouraged to share their experiences and approaches.
