BoF-W-05: No Time Like the Present (Except When There is Change): Teaching Longitudinal Methods

Christine Merrilees (State University of New York at Geneseo), Chystyna Kouros, and Frank He (Southern Methodist University)

Information

This Birds of a Feather discussion will focus on helping students understand when and why longitudinal methods are needed, and how to apply them. Participants will discuss teaching strategies that allow students to work with authentic longitudinal problems while developing  statistical skills necessary to evaluate assumptions, interpret results, and avoid common pitfalls with “messy” data. We will explore ways students can use AI to support their workflow (e.g., generating reproducible, annotated code templates; documenting decisions), while being aware of automation bias. Rather than framing learning as either conceptual or applied, this session will focus on the feedback loop between them.
