BK3A: Scaffolding Success with Projects in the Age of AI

Nicole M. Dalzell and Ciaran Evans (Wake Forest University)

Abstract

Generative AI is increasingly available for students completing applied statistics and data science projects. However, a key feature of such projects is understanding how realities of data and analysis goals intersect to drive the steps needed to choose appropriate techniques, execute these techniques, and effectively communicate results. In this session, we will discuss scaffolded assignments as a tool to help students focus on the conceptual aspects of planning and conducting a data analysis. We will also discuss using class time to create an environment where students are more likely to engage in the work of meaningful statistical discovery without outsourcing the heavy lifting of making statistical decisions to AI tools. We will share some examples that educators can use and adapt for their own classrooms as participants engage in an activity that we use to teach students how to develop a statistical analysis plan.
