When a masterpiece comes with a confidence interval, you know it's significant!
The cartoon for our 115th cartoon caption contest in December is shown above. Amongst the submissions for the contest, the judges found the winning caption to be “When a masterpiece comes with a confidence interval, you know it's significant!,” By Louis Rocconi from the University of Tennessee. Louis’ caption can be used in discussing the role of Confidence Intervals in expressing uncertainty and the relationship between Confidence Intervals and Hypothesis Tests. Two honorable mentions this month recognized the use of the cartoon in discussing good practices for reporting data such as providing a measure of uncertainty, giving the units of measurement and the sample size. The first of these was “The artist’s confidence interval period is considered his most mature work.” by Victor Chongchua from San Diego State University and the second was "Moving left to right, we see that the art becomes increasingly less abstract.” by Sara Colando, a student at Carnegie Mellon University.
