The cartoon for our 114th cartoon caption contest in November is shown above. Amongst the record number of submissions for the contest, the judges found the winning caption to be “Histograms will put wind in your sails, but density functions are a bridge to mathematical statistics.” By Jerry Nedelman from the TB Alliance. Jerry’s caption can be used in discussing the difference between theoretical constructs like the normal density function and graphics arising from data like histograms. Many submissions saw the green cables in the bridge as depicting a bimodal density rather than two different normal curves. Two honorable mentions along those lines were “You don't need a mixed drink to decide which mixture model to use for bimodal data” by Charlie Smith from North Carolina State University and “The bridge wasn't well supported by the mean or median,” by Larry Lesser from The University of Texas at El Paso.
