BoF-T-05: Has AI Changed What Counts as Essential in Statistics Education? Rethinking Coding, Concepts, and Core Competencies

Ilana Trumble (University of Colorado Boulder)

Information

As generative AI increasingly handles coding and execution, many of us are asking hard questions about what truly belongs at the core of statistics and data science education. Should coding fluency still be foundational? If AI can generate correct output, what must students genuinely understand without assistance? Has AI shifted what we mean by rigor? This Birds of a Feather session invites educators across institutional contexts to wrestle candidly with how we are defining essential knowledge in the age of AI. I’m excited to facilitate a lively, thoughtful conversation about balancing coding, concepts, and conceptual transfer in our courses.
