BoF-W-03: Humanizing Asynchronous Introductory Statistics Courses: Community, Belonging, and Engagement at Scale

Christine Ouma (University of Cincinnati, Blue Ash College)

Information

Asynchronous introductory statistics courses often struggle with student isolation, disengagement, and lack of belonging. This session will bring together statistics and data science educators to share strategies for humanizing asynchronous courses while maintaining scalability. Discussion will focus on building community and instructor presence, designing meaningful peer interaction, and thoughtfully integrating generative AI to support connection rather than replace it. Participants will exchange practical ideas, challenges, and successes, with the goal of identifying approaches that spark joy, curiosity, and sustained engagement for students learning statistics in asynchronous environments.
