"Prior: tie. Given a dog, posterior: hare."

October Results:

The cartoon for our 113th cartoon caption contest in October is shown above. Amongst the

submissions for the contest, the judges found the winning caption to be “Prior: tie. Given a dog, posterior: hare.” from Jiaming Tao, a student at North Broward Preparatory school. Jiaming’s caption can be used in discussing how the Bayesian method updates a prior (as implied by the newspaper headline) as new information becomes available. An honorable mention this month goes to Erin Franke, a student from Carnegie Mellon University for the caption “Prediction can be ruff with unmeasured confounders.” Erin’s clever pun focuses attention on how a prediction like the one implied by the headline may not take into account the effect of an unmeasured covariate - like the dog forcing the hare to run faster.

Thanks to everyone who submitted a caption and congratulations to our winners!
