"Much to the eagle's disappointment, the chicks favor the nested model"

The cartoon for our 121st cartoon caption contest in June is shown above. Amongst the 26 submissions for the contest, the judges found the winning caption to be "Much to the eagle's disappointment, the chicks favor the nested model,” written by Erin Franke, a student at Carnegie Mellon University. Erin’s caption can be used in discussing the comparison of more complicated models versus simpler models nested within them (and also in discussing what is meant by a nested effect). The first honorable mention this month goes to Sarah Arpin from Virginia Tech for her caption "But mom, correlation does not imply causality!" that would facilitate a discussion of the causality of the data presented and the type of data that might have generated it (another submission suggested using the cartoon to discuss which variable should be on the X-axis and which variable should be on the Y-axis for the graph presented). A second honorable mention goes to Larry Lesser from The University of Texas at El Paso, for his punny caption “Statistics isn't a fledgling field so don't just wing it: analyze with an eagle eye!,” that invites discussion about all of the data in the picture including contextual information like the fish bones in the nest.
