Caption Contest - January 2019 - Results

The January caption contest featured a cartoon showing a rendition of Edvard Munch’s famous painting showing severe anxiety, The Scream, except that instead of shadowy figures walking on the boardwalk in the background, there is a person at a desk with a computer showing a scatterplot.

The winning caption for the January contest was “The Scree(m) Plot,” written by Larry Lesser from The University of Texas at El Paso. Larry’s caption should be helpful in introducing scree plots and their interpretation in an exploratory principal components analysis to determine the number of factors to be used.

An honorable mention this month goes to Minu Bhunia, a student at the University of Minnesota for the caption: “The feeling you get when the p-value is 0.055,” which can be used in discussing the interpretation of p-values and the arbitrary nature of the 0.05 cutoff.
