Correction: The CAUSE Cartoon Caption Contest for September is now taking entries The Consortium for the Advancement of Undergraduate Statistics Education is happy to announce our 16th Cartoon Caption Contest. Each month a cartoon, drawn by British cartoonist John Landers, will be posted for you and your students to suggest statistical captions. (note the cartoons are posted at the beginning of the previous month) The next cartoon and the entry rules for the contest ending September 10th are at [ https://www.causeweb.org/cause/caption-contest/september/2017/submissions | https://www.causeweb.org/cause/caption-contest/september/2017/submissions ] The best captions will be posted on CAUSEweb and the winner(s) will receive their choice of a coffee mug or t-shirt imprinted with the cartoon or free registration to eCOTS 2018. Enjoy. August Results: We had 11 submissions for the August caption contest that featured a cartoon showing two identical food trucks selling the same things parked next to each other – but one has a long line of customers waiting to be served while the other has no customers at all. The winning caption for the August contest was “Queued for food, the customers failed to grasp expected average waiting time,” written by Larry Lesser from The University of Texas at El Paso. The caption can be used in class discussions that introduce basic queueing theory. An honorable mention also goes to “With a one factor at a time study, Joe never discovered the interaction that drove Sally’s success,” written by Jim Alloway of EMSQ Associates. That caption can be used in discussing how the experimental design affects the interactions that can be detected. Thanks to everyone who submitted a caption and congratulations to our Winners!
