1. I am using a Macintosh and the applets are not working.

Unfortunately, the Macintosh OS does not support Java 1.2.2 unless you have Microsoft IE 5.0 or above. Netscape 4.73 or 6 for the Mac are not compatible. Some of the applets may work on your Mac but for the most part they will not.

2. I am not using a Mac and the applets are not working.

If you are on a PC or a UNIX workstation and you still have problems with the applets you might need to update your browser. The applets and webpages here are optimized for Netscape Navigator/Communicator 4.08 and above and Microsoft IE 5.0 and above. The applets have been thoroughly tested in both environments.

Another possibility is that you lack the Java plugin. To download the plugin go to http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/download.html. The minimum you will need is the JRE (Java Runtime Environment). If you require the Java compiler along with all the APIs, the SDK (Standard Development Kit) is also available from the same location.

Check to see if you have Java enabled in your browser.

    BrowserDirections
    Netscape 4.x
  • Go to Edit and Preferences.
  • Select Advanced.
  • Check to see if the Enable Java checkbox is selected.
  • Explorer 5.x
  • Go to Tools and Internet Options.
  • Select Security.
  • Click Custom Level.
  • Under Microsoft VM check to see if Java is enabled (high security should work).
  • If you still have problems, see either Question 1 or Question 2.

4. I was not able to save the data after running the Experimental Design Applet.

Possible scenarios are that you may not have JavaScript enabled. If this is the case, see Question 5 for enabling JavaScript. Another possible source of the problem might be your browser. Update your browser at http://home.netscape.com/.
